About Ecoroots

Good food starts at the root.

Ecoroots (Pvt) Ltd is a Sri Lankan company built around one idea: the best thing we can do for the forest and its villages is to pay properly for what they make.

01 Our story

Named for where everything begins.

The roots in our emblem stand for the villages, the craft and the forest our products come from. Without them there is no Ecoroots.

We started Ecoroots because kithul, one of Sri Lanka's most remarkable foods, was being lost: undercut by adulterated imitations, undervalued at the farm gate, and almost unknown outside the island.

So we went to the source. We buy directly from tapping families around Sinharaja, process and pack the product ourselves, and sell it to buyers who value where it comes from. We supply Ceylon cinnamon and spices from the same region in the same way.

If kithul pays, the palms stay standing, the craft is passed on, and the young have a reason to stay. That is the whole of our business model.
02 What we stand for

01Pure, or not at all

Our kithul is 100% kithul. We check every batch, and we turn away product that doesn't pass.

02Village first

Direct, fair and prompt payment, and work created in the villages rather than taken away from them.

03Forest-positive

We source from around the reserve, never inside it, and only from living palms or palms at the end of their life.

04Honest claims

We say only what we can show. Facts about Sinharaja and kithul on this site link to their sources.
