Kithul and Ceylon spices for Europe and the UK.

For specialty importers, health-food and fine-food retailers, and food manufacturers in the EU and UK.

In short

Ecoroots ships kithul treacle, jaggery, granules and flour, Ceylon cinnamon and spices from Colombo to the EU and UK, in bulk, retail or private-label packs, with a certificate of origin and a certificate of analysis for every lot. The importer is responsible for meeting EU or UK food law, mainly on traceability, contaminants, pesticide residues and labelling.

What we supply

In retail packs, bulk ingredient packs, food-service sizes or under your own brand (private label).

Documents we provide

  • Commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading or air waybill
  • Certificate of origin
  • Certificate of analysis for each lot, including a cane-sugar adulteration check for kithul
  • Phytosanitary and fumigation certificates where required
  • Organic certification documents for certified lots
  • Third-party laboratory testing to your specification, on request

EU food rules to check

  • General Food Law (Regulation (EC) No 178/2002): food must be safe and traceable one step back and one step forward. Our lot coding traces each pack to its village, tapper and date.
  • Pesticide residues (Regulation (EC) No 396/2005): maximum residue levels apply to spices and tea. Ask for residue testing against EU MRLs.
  • Contaminants (Regulation (EU) 2023/915): sets limits including aflatoxins and ochratoxin A in spices such as pepper and nutmeg.
  • Coumarin (Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008): sets maximum coumarin levels in certain foods made with cinnamon, such as bakery products. Ceylon cinnamon contains far less coumarin than cassia.
  • Labelling (Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011): ingredients, nutrition declaration, net quantity, origin where required and the EU importer's name and address. We can prepare label content in this format for private-label packs.
  • Official controls (Regulation (EU) 2017/625): some products and origins are subject to increased checks at the border under Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/1793. Check the current list for your product before you ship.
  • Organic (Regulation (EU) 2018/848): certified organic imports need an electronic certificate of inspection in TRACES.
  • Novel foods: if kithul is new to your range, ask your regulatory adviser to confirm its status in the EU Novel Food Catalogue.

UK rules

Great Britain kept these rules in its own law after leaving the EU, and they are now enforced separately by the Food Standards Agency (and Food Standards Scotland). Labels for Great Britain need a UK importer or food business address, and some products need pre-notification through the IPAFFS system. Northern Ireland largely follows EU rules.

Shipping to Europe and the UK

We quote EXW, FOB Colombo, CFR, CIF or DAP. Shipments go as consolidated LCL cargo or in 20 ft and 40 ft containers to main European and UK ports, with samples by air courier.

Questions

Can you ship kithul treacle to the EU?

Yes. We export kithul treacle, jaggery, granules and flour to EU and UK buyers, with a certificate of origin and a certificate of analysis for each lot. Ask us about samples.

Is Ceylon cinnamon better for EU coumarin limits?

Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) contains far less coumarin than cassia, which makes it easier for manufacturers to stay within the EU maximum coumarin levels for foods made with cinnamon.

Do you supply private-label packs for European retailers?

Yes. We pack under your brand and can prepare label content in the format required by EU Regulation 1169/2011 or UK rules. Final label compliance remains the importer's responsibility.

Which Incoterms do you offer for Europe?

EXW, FOB Colombo, CFR, CIF and DAP. We can quote on more than one basis so you can compare.
