Kithul and Ceylon spices for the USA and Canada.

For natural-sweetener brands, specialty and South Asian grocers, co-packers and food manufacturers.

In short

Ecoroots ships kithul treacle, jaggery, granules and flour, Ceylon cinnamon and spices from Colombo to the USA and Canada, in bulk, retail or private-label packs, with a certificate of origin and a certificate of analysis for every lot. In the USA the importer files FDA Prior Notice and runs a Foreign Supplier Verification Program; in Canada the importer generally needs a Safe Food for Canadians licence.

What we supply

In retail packs, bulk ingredient packs, food-service sizes or under your own brand (private label).

Documents we provide

  • Commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading or air waybill
  • Certificate of origin
  • Certificate of analysis for each lot, including a cane-sugar adulteration check for kithul
  • Phytosanitary and fumigation certificates where required
  • Organic certification documents for certified lots
  • Third-party laboratory testing to your specification, on request

USA: FDA requirements to check

  • Prior Notice: the FDA must be notified before each food shipment arrives. This is usually filed by the importer or customs broker.
  • Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP): under the Food Safety Modernization Act, US importers must verify that their foreign suppliers meet US safety standards. We provide specifications, lot records and certificates of analysis to support your FSVP file.
  • Labelling: retail packs need an English label with a Nutrition Facts panel, ingredients, net quantity, the name and address of the US distributor or importer, and country of origin marking. We can prepare label content in this format for private-label packs.

Canada: CFIA requirements to check

  • Safe Food for Canadians licence: most food importers need a licence from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and must have a preventive control plan in place before applying.
  • Labelling: retail labels must be bilingual (English and French), with a Nutrition Facts table and the Canadian importer's details.
  • Traceability: importers must be able to trace food one step back and one step forward. Our lot coding traces each pack to its village, tapper and date.

Shipping to North America

We quote EXW, FOB Colombo, CFR, CIF or DAP. Shipments go as consolidated LCL cargo or in 20 ft and 40 ft containers to US and Canadian ports, with samples by air courier.
